The Formation of PAOMFS
The Philippine Association of Oral and Maxillo Facial Surgeons was conceived in late 2011, formed in early 2012, and Formally Incorporated with the SEC in January 2013. Although the Association was formed in 2012, it is in reality the off-shoot of The Philippine Board of Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgeons, which had been formed in 1994, and Incorporated in 1995, but eventually became defunct.
It was determined that a sufficient number of doctors who were limiting their practices exclusively to oral and maxillofacial surgery or were engaged in academics or hospital delivery of specialty care were seeking to group into a cohesive entity, for the advancement of the specialty and for their personal continuing education. The great majority of the Charter group were members possessing double doctorates, either D.M.D., M.D. or D.M.D., Ph.D. degrees, but they quickly expanded to include members with D.M.D., M.D.S. degrees or with D.M.D. and Certificates, who were previous Diplomates, of the now defunct Philippine Board of Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgeons, Inc.
Defining Our Specialty
Simplistically defined, "Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is an Internationally Recognized Surgical Specialty which deals with the diagnosis, surgical and adjunctive treatment of diseases, injuries, deformities, defects and aesthetic aspects of the oral and maxillofacial regions." (American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons).
"Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery corrects a wide spectrum of diseases, injuries and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region." Today the Specialty forms the natural bridge between the current disciplines of dentistry and medicine (OMS, UHK). It is rooted in dentistry, medicine and surgery. The Association seeks to be faithful to the definition, scope and roots of the Specialty.
Our Current Representation
The Association, currently represents a body of practitioners and academics, as well as a small number of research scientists, who are committed to the strengthening and further development of the Specialty of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in the Philippines, and who have chosen to limit their practices or academic endeavours to the Specialty, and related Head and Neck Surgical Fields or Subspecialties; as well as to oral medicine (oral & maxillo-facial medicine). The Fellows do not engage in the practice of general dentistry, and indeed this is one of the requirements for "Full Fellow" Status as a "Specialist".
International Affiliations
Additionally, considering the unique nature and roots of our specialty, we reach out as a bridge to 'both' dental and medical organizations, seeking to be represented in both. Currently, we have ties with the Philippine Academy for Head and Neck Surgery, Inc. an Affiliate of The Philippine College of Surgeons. Two of our Regents were inducted in 1995, shortly after the Academy had been incorporated, and two recent PAOMFS, Inc. Fellows were inducted as Full PAHNSI Fellows in 2011.
The Association is currently exploring international affiliations with Associations of other Countries. It likewise will seek to participate actively in the specialty in the global arena.
